I was thinking about what a young adult would be called if a young adult in 1898. We have the “Millennial Generation”, and Generation Z.
Back in the late 1800s there was the “Lost Generation”. To me, it sounds like a pretty hip title… Ernest Hemingway came up with the term which was used to describe the generation of young people who came of age during World War I.
That got me wondering if some of the same thoughts 20-year olds have now are in any way similar as back in the late 1800s. And what would that be like? Was there a version of up-speak then that adults would roll their eyes to? Did they concern themselves with any of the things young people worry about now? How have twenty-year old’s thoughts changed or even more interestingly, remained the same?
Did this young man wonder if people just admired him for his mustache? Did he fear that one day all he would be remembered for would be his perfect mustache?
